Recycle Day for America was November 15, 2007 and to support Recycle Day, Verizon Wireless had asked the public to contribute to their HopeLine program. The Verizon Wireless HopeLine program has been set up so that anyone can bring old cell phones, batteries, or accessories that are no longer being used. This HopeLine program has been created in the hopes that people will learn what it means to recycle, reduce, and reuse. Verizon’s HopeLine has helped to keep over 200 tons of electronic waste from entering our landfills, has helped collect over 4 million cell phones, and has also helped to dispose of over 1 million cell phones.

The HopeLine is one of those easy ways that we as the public can take part in to help reduce the amount of waste that is being filtered through our environment. With help from Verizon, it is now easy for the public to dispose of their old cell phones and electronic devices properly without adding to the already high levels of waste our environment contains. By collecting old cell phones through this HopeLine, Verizon has been able to refurbish phones and has donated money and cell phones to many domestic violence organizations and programs as well. This HopeLine not only helps to keep the environment clean, but has helped many helpless women and children who suffer from domestic abuse.
